Gantt chart templates for Excel, Google Sheets and PowerPoint

Thirteen ready-made project plans, with phases, durations, dependencies and milestones already in place. Download them as an Excel file that recalculates the dates, as a CSV or as PowerPoint slides, or open them in Planitude and let the scheduling engine do the work.

How to use a Gantt chart template

  1. Choose the closest project

Each template is a complete plan: phases, tasks with durations in working days, links between tasks and the key milestones. Pick the one that looks most like your project.

  2. Download it or open it online

Excel works in Excel and LibreOffice and imports into Google Sheets; PowerPoint gives you editable slides for a presentation; “Open in Planitude” creates a project from the template in your account.

  3. Set the start date and adapt it

Change the project start date: the whole plan moves with it. Then rename tasks, change durations and add the steps specific to your project.

One plan, four formats

Every template is available in all four formats, in your language. The dates are the same everywhere: they come from the same scheduling engine Planitude uses.

  • Excel (.xlsx)

A Gantt chart drawn with conditional formatting: change the project start or a duration and the dates and bars update by themselves. It also opens in LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers.

  • Google Sheets

Import the .xlsx file into Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets: formulas and coloured bars keep working. The CSV is for a plain table, ready to paste.

  • PowerPoint (.pptx)

An overview slide with phases and milestones, then the detailed tasks. Shapes are native and editable, ready for a kick-off or a steering committee.

  • Planitude

The template becomes a real project: dependencies, critical path, baselines and workload, shared with your team for free. You choose the start date before creating it.

How the Excel Gantt chart template works

The project start date is in cell C2. Each task has a start date, a duration in working days and a finish date: start and finish are formulas (WORKDAY and NETWORKDAYS), so they skip weekends and follow the predecessors written in the Predecessors column, using WBS codes as in Microsoft Project.

The weekly grid on the right is coloured by conditional formatting: blue bars for tasks, dark bars for phases, a gold cell for milestones. If you add a row, copy the formulas from the row above and adjust the references to its predecessors.

Gantt chart in Google Sheets

In Google Drive choose New, then File upload, and select the .xlsx file. Open it with Google Sheets: the formulas, the date format and the coloured bars are converted automatically. To keep a copy in Sheets format, use File, then Save as Google Sheets.

If you only need the list of tasks with dates, import the CSV file instead: it contains WBS, task, start, duration, finish, predecessors and progress, one row per task.

When a spreadsheet is no longer enough

A spreadsheet Gantt chart is perfect for a first draft or a plan of a few dozen rows. It shows its limits when the plan changes often: formulas must be copied by hand, there is no critical path, and every update means sending a new file to everyone.

In Planitude the same template becomes a plan that recalculates itself, with the four dependency types, the critical path, baselines and a read-only link for anyone who just needs to look. It is free for the whole team.

Frequently asked questions

Are the templates really free?

Yes. You can download every template in every format without signing up. A free account is only needed to open a template as a Planitude project.

Do the Excel templates work in LibreOffice and Google Sheets?

Yes. They use only standard functions (WORKDAY, NETWORKDAYS, MIN, MAX) and conditional formatting, which LibreOffice Calc and Google Sheets support.

How do I change the start date?

Type the new date in cell C2. All the task dates and the weekly grid move with it, skipping weekends.

Can I open a template in Microsoft Project?

Open it in Planitude and export the project to Microsoft Project XML: Project opens the file and can save it as .mpp.

Can I use the templates for my clients?

Yes, for any project, commercial ones included. If you share them, a link to this page is appreciated.
